Cubs
(8yrs - 10 1/2yrs)
Day: Wednesday
Time: 6:30pm-8pm (except for school holidays)
Location: Standlake Village Hall
We meet at Standlake Village Hall, starting promptly at 6.30 pm and finishing at 8.00 p.m on Wednesday evenings. We aim to run about 10 to 12 sessions each term, although this can vary. At the beginning of each term we issue a programme for the entire term's activities, although again, this may need to be changed at the last moment. During the longer evenings we hope to be able to do events outside.
Cubs is run by Peter Craddock, Matthew Judson, Matt Lodge and Tom Mackintosh, Robert Pidsley and Peter Almgill. Peter Craddock has extensive experience having led all sections in the Group and has been in Scouting with several Groups for 52 years (as of 2020).
The Cub Leaders are usually known to the Cubs by their Jungle Book character names.
Peter Craddock has been known as Simba in the Groups in which he has been a leader since long before the Lion King.
Matt Lodge, known as Mowgli the man child
Tom Mackintosh, known as Bagheera the leopard
Simon Fisher, known as Mang the bat
Robert Pidsley, known as Kaa the snake and
Peter Almgill, known as Baloo the bear
Scouting has a number of Activity Badges and Challenge Awards which we aim to work towards as your child goes from Beavers to Scouts. Should you wish to know more about the award system, you can find details on the Scouts web site. Badges can be worked towards outside of regular Pack meetings by Cubs and discussed with one of the leaders.
In addition to the regular Pack meetings we will try to organise a weekend camp or two each year, some time on the water at the West Oxfordshire Sailing Club where the Scout section of the Group meet during the summer. We will also try to organise a couple of days out in connection with some of the badges.
Yours in Scouting
Matthew Judson (Chil)
Activities
Two main events:
We do expect all Cub Scouts to attend St George’s day parade usually held on the Sunday nearest to 23rd April.
We do expect all Cub Scouts to attend The Remembrance day parade usually held on the Sunday nearest to 11th November.
Visits, other activities and camps are charged at cost. We will send out notices giving details of planned activities in advance, with details of costs and booking dates. Please book and pay promptly if your child wishes to take part in an activity. Where forms need to be completed, please check them carefully and supply all the information requested. Please also sign any forms in all the relevant places so that we do not need to chase up extra information and signatures.
Badge Work (Activity Badges)
During the time your child is a Cub Scout they will move through an award system. Scouting has a number of Activity Badges and Challenge Awards which we aim to work towards as your child goes from Beavers to Scouts. Should you wish to know more about the award system, you can find details on the Scouts web site. Badges can be worked towards outside of regular Pack meetings by Cubs and discussed with one of the leaders
Expectations
These are the only three events that we all must attend with the Beaver and scouts,
a note will be given to parents nearer the time.
Every eighteen months we are inspected as a group by the Royal Navy.

Parental Support
As you will understand, we leaders are volunteers. We have one of the biggest packs in the
district and this means we do ask parents to come along and help run some activities.
Please be prepared to give up your time for a night a year, without your help we cannot run
the activities that the children most enjoy.
Uniform
Scouts are a uniformed organisation and all Cub Scouts are expected to arrive and depart in clean uniform and correctly dressed, unless specifically advised otherwise.
Full unform is worn at the start and end of meetings and for formal occasions. Uniform is an official cubs sweatshirt and either school or scout activity trousers.
Cubs can choose to wear the official hoodie or polo shirt as activity wear for the middle parts of meetins and on camps.
The official uniform Cub Sweatshirt can be purchased online at:-
http://shop.scouts.org.uk/ or www.scout-and-guide-shop.co.uk/
The 1st Standlake & Cokethorpe group Necker will be provided by the group when you cub is formally invested into the pack.
We advise against using badge glue as we often have to remove or replace badges and this leaves a mark. Cubs should be sewing their badges on themselves.
