West Oxon Sea Explorer Scout Unit is open to any young person between the ages of 14-18yrs. The Unit is lead by Katie Pegram. The evening begins and ends with the Colours Ceremony with the Scout Troop. Though Explorers do not necessarily meet every week and prefer to do weekend activities, some choose to still come along and help out as Young Leaders with the Scout Troop.

As Young leaders, the Explorers run activities and games which then help them work towards Young Leader Missions and modules, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and Chief Scout Awards; as well as improving their overall leadership, communication and team skills.

During the summer months, the Explorers join the Scouts either Sailing, Kayaking or Raft building at WOSC, in Standlake.

As part of the 1st Standlake & Cokethorpe RN recognition, the Explorers have the opportunity to go to the National RN Recognised Sea Explorer Scout Camp at HMS Bristol in the autumn half term. Whilst on camp explorers meet others from around the country and have the chance to try out a variety of water activities and some land based ones too! RYA and BCU qualifications can be gained.

Red Nose Day 2009
This year the Explorers took part in a messy afair with Jelly!
A test to see who could work as a team and feed the other blind folded, being directed by another.

Duke Of Edinburgh Award

Recently the Explorers took part in a navigation day, in practice for their Duke of Edinburugh Bronze Award. With full kit being carried for 5km, they hadn't realised how heavy it was going to be!

Which then led to a full practice expedition in Dartmoor and the Peak District.

Explorers can work towards their D of E Awards from age 14. For this they have to participate in a Skill, Physical, Service and Expedition. For more information go to D of E Awards.
The D of E Awards also cover most of the challenges towrds the Chief Scout Platinum and Diamond Awards and Queen Scout Awards.
